Why Tournaments?
Hall Of Fame

The Minnesota Water Ski Association (MWSA) was organized in 1960 to encourage and promote organized and competitive water skiing in Minnesota. Membership is open to anyone living in Minnesota and the surrounding states who is a member of the American Water Ski Association (AWSA), the competition branch of the national organizing body, USAWater Ski.
General membership meetings are held monthly during the off season along with a winter banquet and social get together. The annual meeting is held in conjunction with the Minnesota State Championships during July.

MWSA sponsors three ski tournaments during the summer: the Greater Midwest Open, The Ralph Samuelson Minnesota State Championships (one of the largest in the country), and the Island Lake Ski Tournament. They are all held at Island Lake Park in Shoreview. Many other tournaments are held during the summer months in Minnesota and are sponsored by local water ski clubs.

Tournaments are open to skiers of all ages and abilities, competing in the three events of Slalom, Tricks, and Jumping. Age class competition is set up for Boys and Girls, Men and Women and Novice. All Minnesota tournaments are open to beginning or novice skiers and schedule separate Men and Women novice divisions. All MWSA tournaments give out awards to the top 3 finishers in each age division’s event, plus participant ribbons for Boys and Girls 1-3 (up to age 17) just for competing. A person does not have to be a skier to be a member of MWSA or USAWater Ski. Volunteers are always needed at the tournaments to help set up take registration, judge, score , drive, safety and other areas.

MWSA sponsors the annual Junior Development Camp in June, providing excellent instruction and camaraderie for it’s junior skiers. It is one of the largest in the United States.

MWSA provides leadership to organized water skiing in Minnesota through it’s various committees. The legislative committee is the skier’s voice at the Capitol, and the tournament committee schedules water ski tournaments, provides technical assistance, and helps maintain skier performance records and state records. Tournament judges, scorers, and boat drivers are trained at annual spring training sessions.

The MWSA brings the activities of the American Water Ski Association (USAWaterSki) and the Mid-West Region home to our local skiers. Through the monthly newsletter, the website www.mnwaterski.com, USAWaterSki’s monthly magazine The Water Skier, their website www.usawaterski.org, and the many water ski clubs in the state, local, regional, national, and international events are made more personal and fun through participation by all interested skiers in Minnesota.
